Better With Age: Making the Most Out of 2018
By Kaitlin Irwin
Time to usher in a
brand-new year! 2018 can be filled with health, happiness and fulfillment; you
just need to make the decision to get the most out of it. Don’t worry, it won’t
take huge changes and loads of effort to make the most of a new year. Here are
some tips to improve your well-being, relationships and your attitude as we say
goodbye to 2017 and hello to 2018.
It’s a new year, so why not
try something new? It’s never too late to dive into that hobby you’ve alway
been meaning to try. In fact, lots of recreational centers and community
colleges have classes exclusively for seniors. These are usually at a
discounted rate or even free, so if you want to try your hand at painting,
water aerobics, or knitting, go for it! Engaging in new activities is a great
way to keep your mind sharp, as well as add structure to your day and keep you
social. These are all healthy habits that will start your 2018 on the right
foot!
Another good idea is to
visit your doctor at the start of the new year. Give yourself the peace of mind
knowing how your physical health is doing and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Depending on your age, gender and family history, there might be routine tests
that you need to undergo, so be sure to have that conversation with your health
professional. Staying healthy is key to living your best life, so don’t put
your doctor’s visit on the backburner. You also want to make healthful food
choices and get enough exercise (this is a good opportunity to cook or take a
walk with friends.) Mental health cannot be overlooked either, so be sure to
stay social, get enough sleep, and find an activity that helps to relieve
stress.
The New Year’s festivities
probably brought you closer to friends and loved ones. Well, you can keep that
habit up all year round! There are plenty of resources to keep you connected to
those you care about. Set up a Skype date with your long-distance relatives,
give someone a phone call, or have a weekly get-together with your friends.
Regular social interaction and communication will keep you feeling loved and
appreciated and can even help you fight off some illnesses. That sounds like a
wonderful way to have a healthy and happy 2018!
With just a few deliberate
steps you can put your best foot forward in welcoming a new year and a fresh
mindset.
