Kristi Assiran has dedicated herself to volunteering at Providence Animal Center to help the animals.
By Kaitlin Irwin

Kristi has been in the Philadelphia area for about 32 years, along with her husband and four children. After the move, she took a hiatus from work but had the itch to start working again. She wanted something with flexibility but it also had to be interesting. She chose to go into real estate, receiving her license in 1993 and beginning a 24-year career with Berkshire Hathaway Fox & Roach.
A strong work ethic is one of Kristi’s core beliefs, and she holds this in high regards in both her career and her volunteer efforts. She has volunteered at a West Philadelphia Catholic school, where she worked one-on-one with an elementary school student. The work was fulfilling, but after the student moved out of the area, Kristi realized she wanted to do something different.
She had always had a passion for all kinds of animals, so she started volunteering at Providence Animal Center. She was drawn there due to the excellent care the animals received at the shelter. Kristi was touched by the commitment of the shelter staff as well as the services available and felt that this was the place she felt most fulfilled. Two and a half years later she is still a volunteer at Providence Animal Center.

Kristi helps with cleaning kennels to ensure that the animals have clean and comfortable living quarters while they wait for their forever homes. Her duties include switching out dirty beds, spraying the floors with antiseptic spray, and drying the beds after power-washing them. It’s physical work and it’s not always pleasant but once the dogs are let into their clean kennels it makes all the work worth it. Plus, Kristi can give the pups treats (her favorite things to do!)
These animals are fortunate to be at Providence Animal Center. There is an on-site veterinary clinic which provides medical help for animals at reduced prices, something that these cats and dogs might not receive otherwise. Moreover, the shelter provides care for animals that are owned by abused victims who can no longer take care of them. Once the victims are in a safe environment, the animals are returned.
Throughout her volunteerism, Kristi has developed new friendships, human and animal alike. She shares a special bond with the dogs at Providence Animal Center and has become attuned to their personalities and quirks. In nice weather, she’ll help the dogs get some exercise by taking them for walks or letting them play in the fenced in outdoor space. She also makes it a point to check in with the dogs that have been adopted and she’s thrilled that animals are landing in safe homes all the time.

At the end of the day, Kristi knows that she is committed to her promise of helping defenseless animals who have not received good care to getting a better life and loving home.
