How Do I: Winter Driving & Donating Gently Used Items

Winter Driving Safety

With the winter season upon us, it’s a great time for reviewing some tips for dealing with the snow and ice. Driving in snow can be a harrowing event for many people. So before heading out make sure your car has all the essentials for winter weather. Your winter car kit should include: lock deicer, blanket, shovel, ice scraper/brush, a small sack of sand/gravel, road flares, flashlight & batteries, snacks, water, and a First Aid kit.
  • Clear all snow and ice from your car before driving.
  • Avoid driving when there is low visibility. If necessary, reduce your speed and put the headlights on low beam.
  • Increase following distance to 8 to 10 seconds.
  • Keep the gas tank at least half full to avoid gas line freeze up.
  • Do not use cruise control when driving on a slippery surface.

If you get stuck in a snowdrift
  1. Turn the steering wheel from side to side to release snow from the tires.
  2. Rock your car by alternating between drive and reverse. Step on the gas when in drive. Avoid spinning the wheels, which may dig you in deeper.
  3. Get out and use a shovel to clear more snow and debris.
  4. For traction, sprinkle gravel or sand as close to the tires as possible.
  5. With wheels pointed straight ahead, lightly step on the gas and ease forward. If helpers are pushing, have them on the sides toward the rear – never directly behind.
